Formentera

Formentera is the smallest of the Pitiüses islands (Ibiza and Formentera), located south of Ibiza. It has an area of 77 square kilometres and a population of more than 7.000 inhabitants. Together with s’ Espalmador, it forms a sole municipal area. There are two outstanding areas in its relief: in the eastern part, the highlands of la Mola ( 202 metres above sea level), and in the western part, the Cap de Barbaria peninsula. A stretch of low sandy land links both areas, thus forming eight kilometres of wonderful beaches.

Ibiza and Formentera are separated by a stretch of sea of just 7 kilometres that can be easily crossed by boat.

Formentera is rich in flora and fauna. Formentera’s waters takes in one of the most representative flora communities: the Posidoniae prairies, a seaweed that remains in an excellent condition in Formentera.

Like Ibiza, Formentera offers a wide range of possibilities. In order to discover the traditional economy –now and before- and the popular customs of Ibiza and Formentera’s country life, we highly recommend a visit to Ibiza’s Ethnological Museum.
